| Chris stared out of the window.
The lake at the backside of the house was frozen. He couldn't get why his
grandpa moved to this cold area of the country. To cold for his sake. He
looked at the landscape that somehow intrigued him. The trees covered with
snow, other ones without leaves but with a thin layer of frost covering
the branches. The ice sparkled in the sun and slowly he started to understand
why his grandpa loved to live here. He heard the door slowly opening and
he turned his head a bit. It was his grandpa. "Are they gone?" Chris looked back at the landscape. "Yes they are. Why didn't you say goodbye to them?" Victor moved closer to his grandson until he stood next to him. Chris shrugged his shoulders. Staring outside he saw a young deer jumping out between trees. The animal stared at him for a second before jumping back into the forest. "So what do you want to do?" Victor tried to change the subject. "I think I'm going outside for a walk." Chris gabbed his jacket and walked to the door. "You better grab a scarf on your way out. The wind is very cold today." Victor looked at his grandson leaving the room and he sighed. Chris headed down the stairs and walked towards the closet next to the front door. Getting a black scarf out of it he closed the door of the closet. Putting the scarf on he walked to the kitchen and left through the back door. Taking a deep breath he felt the cold on his lungs but it felt good. He looked around and wondered which direction he should walk. Suddenly that young deer from earlier, well he thought it was the same one, appeared. Getting curious he walked in the direction the young deer appeared. Standing at the edge of the forest he looked carefully if he could see the animal but it was gone. Chris turned around but something caught his eye slowly walking towards it the sun got a hold of it and it sparkled. Making it easier for Chris to find it. It was a necklace hanging at a branch. Frowning he carefully took it of the branch. He looked at it. It was a thin golden necklace and there was a locket on it. He tried to open it but he wasn't successful. Turning it around a few times he couldn't find anything that would tell from who it was. Walking back to the house he kept staring at the necklace. Opening the door he didn't even noticed his grandfather sitting in the kitchen. "What do you have there?" Victor asked curious as he saw that his grandson had more attention for the item in his hand then anything else. "A necklace with a locket. Found it in the forest." Chris sat down slowly taking of his jacket and scarf. Gently placing the necklace on the table he kept staring at it. "It's pretty and you found it in the forest?" Victor asked looking from the necklace to Chris. "Yeah it was hanging at one of the branches." "Well I didn't see anybody walking in this area for the last few weeks." Victor stood up and poured a cop of coffee for Chris. Handing it over he grabbed his jacket from the chair. "I have to run some errands. I'll be back soon if you feel up to it you can chop some wood for me." "Sure." Chris looked up from the necklace giving his grandpa a smile. Victor walked away and Chris stood up putting his jacket on. Quickly finishing his coffee he walked to the back door. Hearing a car drive away he knew that it was his grandfather. He grabbed the door handle but he got a shock. Pulling his hand away quickly, he stepped back. "What the " He said surprised. "Chris." He turned around when he heard his name but he didn't see anybody. "Who's there?" There was no answer. Taking a deep breath he thought that he probably was imagining things now. He turned back to open the door and this time it did open. No shock and no voice. Looking outside he saw that it started to get darker. "Better get that wood chopped." He mumbled. Walking over to the axe and the pile of wood he sighed. He started to work on the pile of wood when he saw a pair of head lights coming down the road. Chris was confused how could his grandfather already be back? He was only away for a few minutes. Shaking his head he saw the car coming closer waving back at his grandfather who drove by he looked at the pile of wood. He was even more surprised when he saw that the pile was almost gone and how the other pile had grown. "This is freaking weird." "What is?" Victor walked up to Chris with a bag in his hands. Seeing the pile of wood that Chris had chopped for him he smiled. "Nice job. We have enough for a few days. Could you stack it up against the house?" Chris nodded and started to collect the logs. Victor walked to the house going inside. Chris finished his stacking and followed his grandfather in. "What did you get?" Chris asked curious. "Some groceries we got to eat you know." Victor said winking while he put some of them away. "Yes eat so uhm what are we eating?" Chris said noticing that his stomach was protesting because he hadn't eaten for a while. "I think I'll make us some spaghetti." Victor said smiling when he saw Chris his hungry face. "Yes please." Chris smiled back thinking of the delicious spaghetti his grandfather always made. It was a real treat when he made that. Chris sat at the table watching his grandfather making dinner. His mind started to wondered off thinking about his sister. He couldn't believe it, he couldn't believe that it was actually his fault she ended up If he only could remember what had happened back then, what happened that night. He tried to remember but it was stuffed away deep in his mind. The memories weren't planning on coming out any time soon. "Chris can you set the table?" Victor looked at his grandson who wasn't mentally in the room. "Chris " Chris looked up when he heard his name. Seeing his grandfather staring at him he smiled. "Sorry 'bout that. Dinners ready?" He asked. "Yeah it is could you set the table?" Victor asked again walking back to the stove to check up on his sauce. Chris stood up and got the plates out of the cabinet. Placing them on the table he walked back to get the cutlery. Walking back to the table he sat down waiting for his grandfather with the spaghetti. |
